DESIGNER HISTORY – PIERRE BALMAIN

Pierre Balmain was born in 1914 in St. Jean de Maurienne, France. He discovered early on his love for fabrics and designing as after his father had passed away, Pierre would often accompany his mother to her job of dress making. While his mother would work alongside his aunts, Pierre would play with the fabrics, learning the textures and nuances that made each one unique.

A student of architecture at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, Pierre Balmain never completed his studies, instead focusing on designing dresses. He eventually was able to show his creations to Robert Piguet and Molyneux, the latter promising to give him a trial position. Pierre worked for Molyneux from 1934 to 1939, with a brief interruption for military service in 1936. In 1939, Pierre found work with Lucien LeLong and remained there during the time Paris was occupied by the Germans.

Pierre Balmain opened his own design house in 1945 and launched his first perfume in 1947. That initial fragrance was named after Pierre’s phone number, Elysees 64-83. Four years later, Pierre opened stores in the U.S. to sell his ready-to-wear collection. His signature looks included simple, well-tailored suits and grand evening gowns that emphasized elegance and featured slender, supple lines.

From 1951 to 1972, Pierre Balmain designs graced the Hollywood silver screen as his collections quickly became in demand both on and off screen and his clothing was also featured in Brigitte Bardot’s landmark film, God Created Woman. In addition, Pierre Balmain influenced many future designers as he mentored Gerard Pipart, Jean-Baptiste Caumont, John Cavanagh and Karl Lagerfeld. In 1964 Pierre Balmain published his autobiography, titled My Years and Seasons.

Pierre Balmain died in 1982 while living in Paris. His influential design house has continued on under the watchful eye of numerous respected designers since his unfortunate passing.
