KENNETH COLE

History of the Kenneth Cole Designer Brand

Kenneth Cole was born in 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. Charlie Cole, father to Kenneth, owned the El Greco shoe manufacturing company, where Kenneth worked before starting his own line in 1982. Cole spent all of his money in Europe making shoes, and returned to New York only to discover that he had didn’t have a place to sell them, nor the money to open a store. Fortunately, inspiration struck when a 40-foot trailer parked at 1270 6th Avenue, across the street from the New York Hilton, read "Kenneth Cole Productions" painted in large print along the side. Its founder parked it there the day of a shoe show and 40,000 pairs of shoes, Kenneth Cole’s entire stock, were sold within just two and a half days. The result of the success of the venue would eventually lead Kenneth Cole to branch out into his own line of equally lucrative products including apparel, cologne, perfume and designer accessories.
