HALSTON – DESIGNER HISTORY

Roy Halston Frowick was born on April 23, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa, and eventually went on to be one of the preeminent designers in American history. In 1951, he dropped out of Indiana University and when his family moved to Chicago a year later, he found work as a window dresser while taking night classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

In 1957, Frowick opened his first shop called The Boulevard Salon on Morth Michigan Avenue in Chicago and at that same time, started using his middle name, Halston, as his professional name. Later that same year, Halston moved to New York City where he worked under Lilly Dache. Within a year, he graduated into the role of co-designer at Dache, eventually leaving the company to be the head milliner at Berdgorf Goodman. Halston’s claim to fame took place in 1961, when he designed the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy at her husband’s presidential inauguration. Dubbed “the premier fashion designer of all America” by Newsweek, it wasn’t long before Halston’s designs were worn by everybody who was anybody in the 1970s.

In the late 80s, Halston’s life took a turn for the worse as his growing drug addiction had a dramatic impact on his business. He was reluctant to hire junior designers and as such, was often unable to meet his deadlines. He was eventually fired by his own company in October of 1984 and was legally restricted from designing or selling products bearing his own name. Halston died in San Francisco in 1990 from AIDS-related complications.

Halston Perfume

Halston perfumes, due in part to their timeless quality and impeccable design, are just as popular now as they were back in the jet set days of the 70s. In fact, Halston perfume, introduced in 1975, was at one point the second biggest selling perfume of all time. Later releases included Halston Sheer, Catalyst for Women and Halston Unbound for Women.

Halston Cologne

There are not many men who haven’t worn and loved Halston cologne. From the best selling Halston 1-12 to Halston Z-14, at one point nearly every dresser in America had one of these little round brown bottles sitting on it. More recent Halston colognes include Z by Halston and Catalyst for Men.
