ISSEY MIYAKE

History of the Miyake Design Studio

Issey Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938. He flourished in the fashion industry in both Paris and New York City shortly after graduating from the Tama Art University in Tokyo, where he studied graphic design. In 1970, Issey Miyake returned to Tokyo and founded the Miyake Design Studio. Miyake’s work during the 1970s was largely conceptual and he incorporated age-old Japanese traditions to pioneer a vast array of designing techniques. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that Issey Miyake would make a lasting impression on the fashion industry. By using natural fibers and other fabrics, and combining painstaking and consistent research at the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo, Issey Miyake created signature designs that would quickly realize tremendous success.

The Launch of Issey Miyake Perfume

The first Issey Miyake perfume launched in 1992 was a light aquatic-floral scent named L’eau d’Issey. Two years later, in 1992, the company released L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme, a men's cologne that also realized great success. L’eau d’Issey Pour Homme Intense, was later introduced in the U.S. in June of 2007. To this day, the Beauté Prestige International division of Shiseido continues to produce Issey Miyake’s line of fragrances for both men and women under a long-term agreement. The Beauté Prestige International division also produces colognes and perfumes designed by popular designers Jean-Paul Gaultier and Narciso Rodriguez.
