Guerlain Perfumes at Perfume.Net
Unlike other companies that begin as fashion houses and then expand into the perfume business, Guerlain was always focused on perfume alone. It is thought to be amongst some of the oldest perfume houses out there. A perfume made by Guerlain often has a distinctive scent that some people refer to as “Guerlinade.” It’s mostly the scent from a combination of vanilla and amber characteristic of many Guerlain fragrances. This noticeable fragrance signature was so well known and respected that a fragrance was eventually produced called Guerlinade to celebrate it. Guerlain was a family-run operation, with the management and perfume creation being done by sons born in the Guerlain family. The perfume house was founded in 1828 by Pierre-Françoise Guerlain and had a loyal following among high society of that day. Pierre-Françoise perfumes continued to gain acclaim and eventually he earned the title of His Majesty’s Official Perfumer. This allowed him to create fragrances for the royals in various courts, including Queen Victoria from England and Queen Isabella from Spain. The house and the perfume legacy was passed through four generations of Guerlain sons who all put their stamp on the tremendous legacy left by the founder. The fragrance called Jicky was created by Aime Guerlain and is considered one of the first modern perfumes. It is a classic fougere. Jean-Paul Guerlain is the current master perfumer in the family line. He created Vetiver, Habit Rouge, and Coriolan, amongst many other fragrances. The house has over 300 fragrances to its credit with many of them being influential on the perfume industry as a whole. It is said that there are no other heirs to take the place of Jean-Paul Guerlain and the long family dynasty may end soon. However, we will still have their legacy and their brand name as marketed now by LVMH who acquired the company in 1994.
