Escada has a colorful history and an engaging story line. The elements of romance, sporty living, and luck have a lot to do with both Escada’s founding and it’s present image. The possibility for its inception began when Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley met during a skiing trip to St. Moritz. They instantly fell in love and proceeded to marry and travel together. They ended up in Portugal where they placed a large wager on a horse named “Escada,” which means staircase in Portuguese. It won and the proceeds of their win were used to found the fashion house now bearing the name of the winning horse. It was famous for luxury sportswear, which is very much in line with how the Ley’s met. The fashion house gained national prominence in 1984, several years after already opening stores in America, when Vogue did an issue devoted to their brand. It ended up catapulting this fashion house into worldwide recognition too, with an initial public offering (IP0) in 1986 that was widely publicized. Escada has since moved from women’s sportswear to include luxury fashion and accessories. They offer handbags, scarves, accessories, and fragrances. There are quite a few fragrances offered with the Escada name, for both men and women. They even offer bath accessories in the fragrances too. There is Escada for both men and women and then there are other fragrances with trendy names like “Into the Blue” and “Ibiza Hippie.” Others fragrances offered are: Island Kiss, Escada Sentiment, Sexy Graffiti, Tropical Punch, Lily Chic, and more. The prices for Escada perfumes are not in the luxury range. They appear to be more sporty and available for mass consumption. However, the Escada name does lend them an air of luxury and can remind one of a great love and good luck story too.
