Founded in 1980, Perry Ellis built its reputation with casual, elegant sportswear designed specifically for the affluent American male. The collection quickly grew to include womens wear, and by the mid-eighties, the Perry Ellis brand was synonymous with sophisticated, preppy style. After Ellis's death in 1986, tightly knit polo shirts and cable-knit cashmere sweater dresses gave way to grunge to very mixed results. He was fired in 1992, and the brand resumed a more traditional course. Today, under the direction of John Crocco, Perry Ellis still aims to embody a classic, effortless look but faces a slew of competitors like Tommy Hilfiger, Le Tigre, Lacoste, and the formidable Ralph Lauren. Perry Ellis fashion line extends to shoes and fragrances. 

Perry Ellis Perfume History

The Perry Ellis fragrance line was originally licensed to Sanofi Beaute, Inc., but sold to Parlux Fragrances, Inc., and helped to restore prestige to the ailing label in 1994. Fragrances debuted in 1985 with Perry Ellis for Women and Perry Ellis for men. Later scents include 360 for women (1993), 360 for men (1995), America (women & men, 1996).
In addition to continuing the existing women’s scent 360 Degrees and Perry Ellis for Men, Parlux introduced Perry Ellis America, 360 Degrees for men, and Perry Ellis Reserve (a scent distributed solely to tuxedo shops)—all in 1996. Recent releases include Perry Ellis for Men (2008), Perry Ellis for Women (2009), Perry Ellis Platinum Label for Men (2009).
