John Varvatos was born in Allen Park, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan to parents who originated from the Greek island of Kefalonia. He got his start in the fashion industry in 1983 when he started working for legendary designer Ralph Lauren’s Polo line. In 1990, John Varvatos became the head of menswear design for none other than Calvin Klein but returned to Polo to become VP of their menswear line in 1995.

 

In 1999, John Varvatos started his own design company and his first collection debuted near the end of 2000. In 2000, the designer was licensed to create a line of shoes for Converse All-Star, which he continues to do to this day. His line was so successful, the company eventually had him design shoes for their One Star and Jack Purcell campaigns. In 2003,

John Varvatos the company became part of Nautica Enterprises, Inc. which was acquired not long after by VF Corporation. Two years later, John formed a partnership with VF to create John Varvatos Enterprises, Inc., where he serves as CEO and President.

 

In 2004, John Varvados formed an alliance with Shiseido and started designing men’s and women’s fragrances. His first fragrance launch was for the men’s cologne, John Varvados Classic.

A world renowned designer, John Varvados is the recipient of numerous industry awards and honors, including the CFDA’s Menswear Designer of the Year Award for 2005 and 2001, the Perry Ellis Award for Menswear in 2000 and the GQ Designer of the Year in 2007.

 

John Varvados’ initial fragrance launch was in 2004 with the release of John Varvados Classic. That signature scent was followed two years later by John Varvatos Vintage. In 2009, the designer released John Varvatos Artisan, a scintillating scent featuring notes of tangelo, marjoram, orange blossom and twelve other notes.
