SONIA RYKIEL – DESIGNER HISTORY
Sonia Rykiel was born in Paris, France on May 25, 1930. She got her start in the fashion industry at the age of 17 when she was employed by a Parisian textile shop to dress the window displays. In 1953 she married clothing boutique owner, Sam Rykiel. It was during her pregnancy in 1962 that she started what would be a lifelong career in fashion. While pregnant, she couldn’t find any comfortable maternity sweaters, so she decided to make her own. Not long after, she started designing for her husband’s label, Laura.
One of Sonia Rykiel’s first creations was also one of her most popular. Her Poorboy Sweater found its way onto the cover of Elle Magazine and it brought her instant fame. In the United States, she was heralded as the Queen of Knits. Later in her career, she became the first designer to print words on a sweater as well as the first to put the seams on the outside of the garment. In 1968, Sonia Rykiel opened up her first boutique.
In 1980, Sonia Rykiel was named one of the World’s Most Elegant Women. In 2005, Henri Bendel opened an in-store shop to carry the Sonia Rykiel Woman line of apparel, making it her first shop in the U.S. She currently has three boutiques in the United States (New York, Boston and Guam). In 2009, the Queen of Knitwear collaborated with Swedish design house H&M for a collection of underwear called Sonia Rykiel pour H&M.
Sonia Rykiel Perfumes
In 1997, Sonia Rykiel perfumes launched with the release of Sonia Rykiel Perfume. It was an exotic blend of Oriental spices, fruits and vanilla and it was presented in a remarkable t-shirt inspired bottle, which many of her future fragrances would share. Other noteworthy Sonia Rykiel perfumes include Belle En Rykiel, L’Eau De Sonia Rykiel, Rykiel Woman Not For Men and Sonia Rykiel Rose.
Sonia Rykiel Colognes
In 1999, the first Sonia Rykiel cologne was released, the men’s version of her popular Sonia Rykiel fragrance. It was followed by 2002’s release of Sonia Rykiel Grey and 2004’s Rykiel Man.
