NARCISO RODRIGUEZ – DESIGNER HISTORY
Narciso Rodriguez was born on January 27, 1961 in Newark, New Jersey to Cuban immigrant parents. Against the will of his parents, who wanted him to study to become a doctor, he entered Parsons New School for Design in New York City to study design and art. After performing freelance work for a while in New York’s garment industry, Narciso Rodriguez eventually landed the position of Women’s Design Director for Anne Klein where he worked under fashion icon, Donna Karan. From there he moved to Calvin Klein where he on the brand’s collection for women.
Narciso Rodriguez launched his own label in 1997 and quickly drew attention for the wedding dress he designed for Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wore in her wedding to John F. Kennedy, Jr. In 2005, Rodriguez became the first American designer to win the coveted Council of Fashion Designers of America Womenswear Designer of the Year award. He received the award again the very next year.
2003 saw the launch of Rodriguez’s fragrance line with the design house’s release of Narciso Rodruguez For Her. The perfume was designed and developed in partnership with Shiseido's Beauté Prestige International division.
In 2007, Liz Claiborne acquired a 50% interest in Narciso Rodriguez’s company while it was experiencing financial problems due to a fallout with its manufacturer. But, in 2008, with his company’s finances revived, Rodriguez bought the interest back. Also in 2008, the designer designed the dress worn by Michelle Obama as she accompanied her husband, Barack Obama, in his first appearance as President-elect of the United States in Grant Park in Chicago.
