BETSEY JOHNSON DESIGNER HISTORY

Designer Betsey Johnson is known for her fun, colorful, over-the-top designs. Betsey Johnson first took the New York fashion world by storm in 1964 when she won Mademoiselle magazine's "Guest Editor Contest." Following her win she became the in-house designer for the boutique Paraphernalia in New York City. It was during this time that she became part of the hip 1960s Warhol scene, using Andy Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick as her model. John Cale of the Velvet Underground wore her clothes both on and off stage, and later became her husband. In the early 1970s she began designing for the Alley Cat label and in 1972 she won the Coty Award for her designs that encompassed rock n' roll style with ethnic and bohemian influences.

She started her own fashion label in 1978 and her success grew even more. Betsey Johnson was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame and won the 2009 Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement in Fashion.
