PAUL SEBASTIAN

History of the Paul Sebastian Design

In 1979, Leonard Paul Cuozzo and Alan Sebastian Greco, two New Jersey natives, joined forces to create a successful men’s cologne line known globally as Paul Sebastian Inc. The spark that fueled the fire to the Paul Sebastian brand ignited when Cuozzo became interested in creating fragrances, an interest he developed after living near the International Flavors & Fragrances plant in Union Beach. Cuozzo later paired his budding skills as a perfumist with the business expertise of close friend and future business partner, Greco, a national sales manager working for Textron at the time. The duo bottled their first cologne, a blend Cuozzo had been working on with New York perfumer Fritzsche Dodge for twelve years, and later sold it to three men’s clothing stores in New Jersey.

The startling success of its original cologne expanded the Paul Sebastian brand to over 300 stores within two years of its inception, and the company would gross more than $200,000 per year. The Paul Sebastian brand also introduced an astounding innovation to the fragrance market with their “gift with purchase” concept. What started out as giving teddy bears to customers in 1983, and eventually offering a line of fine porcelain pieces to match the fragrances, the “gift with purchase” concept soon became the trademark of the Paul Sebastian design. In 1989, the company went international.
